Service Dogs - Dogs Training to Help the Disabled

!±8± Service Dogs - Dogs Training to Help the Disabled

Service Dogs are dogs trained to work or perform tasks that help mitigate the effects of a disability for the handler/owner. In other words, they are trained to do things like:

Retrieve things that drop or are hard to reach Open & close doors (including the one to the refrigerator) Push elevator buttons Turn light switches on & off Carry items in their mouths or backpacks Provide physical support for transfers to and from a wheelchair Provide balance and support Go get help should their handler/owner need human assistance, etc...

And these pets also provide unconditional love and companionship to their owners, as well.

Service dogs are also able to accompany their owners just about everywhere they go. Since the handler of a Service Animal is protected under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), service dogs are free to access public buildings and public forms of transportation, including trains, subways, buses, planes, etc...

So, what does it take to become a Service Dog?

Any dog can train to become a service dog, as long as the dog has the desirable character traits for one. These dogs need to have good temperament (good manners & sociable), be of good health, have good physical structure, and they need to be intelligent and easily trainable.

Most of the dogs selected begin their training as puppies. For the first year, the dog is raised by a dedicated volunteer foster family who trains the dog in basic dog obedience and socialization, using the guidelines provided by the Service Dog Organization.

After a year or so, the dog is returned to the organization where he is evaluated to determine what 'service category' he is best suited for. Formal training begins with the core training program. This is where the dog is taught all the basic skills that all these special dogs need to know how to perform. Then the dog is further trained to perform the other tasks and skills that will address the specific needs of the applicant he will be matched up with.

Dogs entering the program come from private breeders, some are bred by the organization that will be responsible for their training, and there are some dogs that are even selected from shelters! The most common dog breeds used are: Golden Retrievers, Labs, and German Shepherds.

These truly special pets work hard to help the disabled lead more independent lives.

How to Make a Fishing Pole Dog Toy For Cheap

!±8± How to Make a Fishing Pole Dog Toy For Cheap

Does your dog have a lot of energy & is making you crazy? Do you not feel like tiring yourself out while trying to tire out your dog? You can make this fun toy for your dog without spending the 20 or 30 dollars that the pet stores charge for it.

Why do dogs like this toy? Most dogs, especially dogs with high prey drives like border collies & German shepherd dogs, have an inborn desire to chase things that run away from them. When you drag the end of this toy in front of your dog, it simulates an small animal running away from your dog & it wants to chase and catch it. You get to stay in one place and not get tired while your dog gets a great work out. Also, the squirrels in your yard will thank you!

Supplies

An old broomstick with the broom part cut off,
6 feet of rope,
2 old socks or long scraps fabric,
Duct tape

Instructions

STEP 1-Take your rope and tie a knot in one end, then make a knot 2 inches below the first knot.
take about 2 feet of duct tape and tape the rope to one end of the broomstick, between the knots.

STEP 2 - Bundle the two socks together and tie the remaining end of the rope around them securely.

TADA, you're done!! Now you have a 'fishing pole' toy for your dog! You made it by yourself & made it from materials that you had around your home!!

To play with the new toy that you have made, just have your dog chase it in a circle around you. You can also make your dog jump for it by suspending the 'sock' end in the air.

Buying Gold - How Important is it to Our Future Economic Survival

!±8± Buying Gold - How Important is it to Our Future Economic Survival

As a retired psychologist who has ardently practiced mindfulness meditation for about 35 years, I strongly value being as fully and as accurately aware as possible of both inner and outer reality. For me, this is in keeping with the wise and often cited verse from Proverbs, "where there is no vision, the people perish,"

Seeing clearly in a world as filled with complexity, non-transparency, deception and outright lies as ours is, however, is a very daunting challenge to say the least and demands a great deal of diligent searching for the truth.

In this regard, I'd like to summarize very briefly here what I've become aware of recently in researching the importance to one's financial future of buying gold. I hope it will be helpful to others who are interested in getting an accurate answer to this important question.

To this end, I think it's important to understand the following basic background facts:

1. Gold has long been a basic standard of economic exchange in many of the world's great empires. In more modern times, it has officially become the standard to which other currency was pegged, first as the gold specie standard and later as the gold bullion standard. The former was started in Great Britain in 1821. Canada followed suit in 1853, as did the U.S. and Germany in 1873.

2. In these and other countries, these standards have been abandoned as a result of monetary crises associated with economic depression and/or war. This happened in the British Commonwealth at the outset of WW I, in Germany in the 1920's and in the U.S. in 1933.

3. After WW II, the Bretton Woods Agreements set up a system similar to the gold standard. Through this system, many countries fixed their exchange rates relative to the U.S. dollar. The U.S., in turn, agreed to maintain the price of gold at per ounce. Effectively, then, all currencies pegged to the dollar also had a fixed value in terms of gold.

4. This collapsed in 1971 when President Richard Nixon ended the direct convertibility of the dollar to gold in order to help fund the Vietnam War. This breakdown came to be known as "Nixon Shock." Since then, the monetary systems of nearly all nations have been based fully on "fiat money"-i.e., currency declared by a government to be legal tender even though it has no intrinsic value and is not backed by gold or silver. For this reason, it is at high risk of becoming devalued or even worthless through hyperinflation.

5. For more than 70 years, the U.S. government has resorted to printing fiat money to stay financially afloat. For approximately the first 40 of these years, this was done quite cautiously, and the US dollar continued to maintain its trustworthy status as universal money. The resulting debt incurred through this process started accelerating significantly from 1970 through 1990 and has soared dramatically since then, riding continuously on the international reputation of the dollar. This has allowed Americans overall to enjoy a standard of living well beyond their means. The level of this national debt has now become staggering-amounting to around ,000 per American family.

Our current financial predicament as a nation, then, is highly analogous to that of an individual who is at high risk of bankruptcy. In other words, if our national creditors were to stop trusting in U. S. dollars and if those dollars consequently lost their acquired status as the world's universal money, this enormous bubble of debt could precipitously burst. On the basis of historical precedents in other countries, this would not only destroy American wealth through hyperinflation, but would likely seriously undermine our American liberty as well.

The only way to protect oneself against this potential financial catastrophe is to shift funds into something of intrinsic value that will continue to retain its value in spite of such an eventual collapse of the monetary system. Due to its very long history of value maintenance through monetary crises, gold is the commodity most commonly chosen as an optimal means of securing at least a part of one's wealth.

In considering this option, it has been highly important to me to study the history of the gold market -especially over the past several years-and to gain a clear vision of its probable trajectory in the near future. In doing so, I have also taken into account the current consensus of several respected financial experts, including Mark Faber, Michael Maloney, Robert Kiyosaki, Mark Arbeter, Mark Luschini, Scott Redler, and others.

Over the past 11 years, gold has steadily increased in value from 3 per ounce on 9/99 to ,266 on 6/28/2010-an average of 45% per year. Without exception, all of the above authorities predict that this rise will continue. Some of them, in fact (Mike Maloney and Robert Kiyosaki, in particular), argue strongly that it will continue to rise MUCH higher-to ,000 per ounce, or beyond, in the next few years.

I find Mike Maloney's reasoning in this regard to be strongly compelling. He points out that this run-up on gold is being driven first by markedly increasing concern about the progressive deterioration of fiat money systems throughout the world. In addition, this is the first time in the recent history of the gold market that the populations of Russia, China, and large South American countries are positioned to contribute in a major way to the demand for gold. According to his analysis, this-all by itself-effectively doubles the demand for gold.

As a result of this extensive due diligence, I have arrived at the fairly strong conclusion that most people would probably be wise to convert at least some of their money into gold. This view has been strengthened in learning that it's now possible to buy gold in very small (1 gram and 0.5 gram) quantities and to have it stored without charge in the vault of a highly prestigious Swiss bank. At least one company has also developed a gold cash card that allows its customers to pay for purchases from their gold account.

Even more impressively, this same company pays attractive commissions to their customers for referring others, who then become customers as well.

Evolutionary Spirituality - Reclaiming the "Great Story" of the Universe As Our Personal Genealogy

!±8± Evolutionary Spirituality - Reclaiming the "Great Story" of the Universe As Our Personal Genealogy

Introduction:

Evolutionary Spirituality is a highly promising new generic paradigm, uniting evolutionary science with a very rich and highly inspiring form of spirituality. Although it is in a very early stage of evolution and development, it has already differentiated into some closely-related sub-forms, such as Michael Dowd's Evolutionary Christianity, Lawrence Wollersheim's Universe Spirituality and Eco-spirituality, as formulated by Joanna Macy, John Seed and others.

In keeping with the general "arrow of evolution" of the universe, which entails ever-increasing levels of diversity, complexity, and integrated order, Evolutionary Spirituality may well represent a major new stage or level of human evolution that's on a par with the initial use of tools by our human ancestors, their development of language, etc.

Along with integrating science and spirituality, Evolutionary Spirituality also brings together and extends Eastern and Western wisdom traditions, merging them with active forms of social engagement. Specifically, much like a higher order scientific theory, it offers an elegant way to integrate the mystical experience of Non-duality with an ongoing active spiritual practice of socially-engaged creative evolution. Within this framework, it is possible for people to evolve beyond ego and to develop an enlightened sense of self without living as ascetics in relative solitude as has been required in most historical spiritual traditions.

Some Brief History:

The origins of this creative union of evolutionary science and spirituality go back to the German Idealists of the 19th century, prior to the publication of Darwin's "Origin of Species." They include the philosophers, Friedrich Schelling, Immanuel Kant, J.G. Ficte, and Georg Hegel.

This movement continued to develop in the 20th century through the enlightened vision and contributions of Ramana Maharshi and Sri Aurobindo in India and those of its Western pioneers, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Henri Bergson, Alfred North Whitehead, Thomas Berry, and Brian Swimme.

With the advent of the 21st century, this revolutionary new paradigm has been given rapidly accelerating impetus through Michael Dowd's watershed book, "Thank God for Evolution," along with the growing acceptance of the Integral philosophy of Ken Wilber, Andrew Cohen, Craig Hamilton, and many others.

A Brief Overview of Evolutionary Spirituality:

Here is a brief overview of some of the key assumptions and important implications of Evolutionary Spirituality:

The universe suddenly evolved from formlessness into form 13.7 billion years ago through what is commonly called "the Big Bang." It has continued to evolve over this time span into ever-increasing levels of diversity, complexity, and integrated order. Much like a graduated set of nested objects, the universe has evolved directionally into a hierarchy of holons, ranging in scale from sub-atomic particles, to atoms, to molecules, multi-celled organisms, groups of such organisms, the entire biosphere of planet earth, the solar system, the Milky Way galaxy, and-ultimately--the entire universe of galaxies. Just as every cell in a living organism is integrally one with that organism, humans are integrally one with the universe; we are, in other words, the universe itself. Our bodies are literally composed of "stardust"-that is, of the various elements that were forged in giant stars billions of years ago and then released in huge supernovae explosions. By evolving into conscious life forms on this planet, the universe started becoming self-aware. Through its further evolution into human consciousness, the process of evolution itself has become self-aware. As a result, humans are now positioned to become conscious co-creators in the ongoing process of evolution. This includes evolving themselves into progressively higher and more integrated levels of development. The 13.7 billion year "Great Story" of how the universe has evolved from the Big Bang into what we are today offers an awesome, fact-based creation story to replace all of the many mythic (that is, fictional) creation stories that humans have believed and relied on historically for existential meaning. The depth and richness of meaning it offers is as expansive as the universe itself. Through a full understanding of this factual reality, for example, each human life, is seen to be the lawful outcome of a fantastically long and complex evolutionary process, each and every tiny step of which has been a crucially necessary condition in order for it to come into being. In other words, each of us owes our life not only to our parents and other recent ancestors, but rather to the collective contributions of an incomprehensibly large number of ancestral beings extending down through eons of time. Correspondingly, it can be seen that every single human action in each of our lives inevitably contributes to the ongoing co-creation of the universe; in other words, each and every one of us participates, consciously or unconsciously, as a "co-author" in writing the ongoing "Great Story." To the degree that we clearly and consciously recognize/embrace these existential facts, we are likely to experience profound gratitude, as well as an equal degree of what the modern consciousness philosopher, Ken Wilber, calls "divine pride;" that is, by consciously recognizing our integral participation in the universal "Great Story," we see also that we are, indeed, one with the Great Being through which it progressively unfolds.

Much more in-depth and comprehensive information about this important new science-based spiritual paradigm can be found on my blog, "Wise Ways to Happiness."

Dahle Professional Scissors - A Review

!±8± Dahle Professional Scissors - A Review

If you use scissors often, you probably want to get the best pair possible. You should choose a pair that's comfortable, durable, and sharp, as well as one you can afford. One option available to you is a pair of Dahle Professional Scissors. These are cutting tools that are made from high-quality materials and they are available in four different lengths. Like any pair of shears, they have some strengths and weaknesses which are outlined below. Read on to learn all about these cutters so you can determine if a pair is right for your needs.

Strengths:
Dahle professional scissors come in four lengths. Model number 50044 are four inches long, model 50046 is six inches long, model 50048 is eight inches long and model 50050 is ten inches long. Choose the length that best suits your particular project or needs. As with many of other Dahle's products, these scissors blades are made from Solingen steel, a type of metal from Germany that's very durable. The super sharp blades have a hardness rating of 56 Rockwell so they're very sturdy, and they're rust-resistant too. Since these cutters are so sharp, they are perfect for when you need a really precise cut. The 10-inch pair can help you cut larger pieces of paper in less time. The blades are fastened with a screw that can be tightened if your scissors become too loose. Unlike scissors that are angled, these shears are straight so they can be used with ease by both right- and left-handed people. The handles are made from ABS plastic, a very tough material that can withstand a lot of use. These handles are so strong it is nearly impossible to break them, so that, combined with the Solingen steel blades, make these products extremely durable. Each pair is back by 90-day warranty.
Weaknesses:
Since these are professional-grade cutters, they will cost more than a more basic set of shears. Expect to pay anywhere from .95 to .95 per pair depending on the length you choose. These scissors are recommended for trimming paper, but they're not ideal for cutting other materials, such as fabric. Although these are very good cutters, they are still not as good as Dahle Super Shears. Super Shears can cut just about anything and are available in seven different sizes. (There's also an additional pair, the All-Around Shear, that is great for heavy-duty cutting.) Plus, Super Shears have a better warranty: they're covered by Dahle for as long as you own them. The handles on these scissors are not ergonomically friendly so you may experience some fatigue when using them. If you would like a pair of scissors that are more comfortable to use, Dahle Comfort-Grip Shears might be a good choice.

Dahle Professional Scissors would be a good choice if you need a sharp pair of shears to cut paper and you're at ease with the product's handle design and price. However, if you work with other types of materials or you want a pair that will be easy on your hands, you would be better off with a pair of Super or Comfort-Grip Shears, respectively. Whatever product you choose, it will be a good one since Dahle makes some really great cutting tools. Just be sure to be get the one that's right for you.

How To Groom Your German Shepherd

!±8± How To Groom Your German Shepherd

Even if you don't bath your German Shepherd often, regular grooming is essential. By maintaining proper grooming procedures you can reduce your dog's chance of having skin problems while keeping the coat shiny. It is best to maintain grooming every night, but first do eight to twelve weeks of moderate grooming. To manage the double coat present on a German Shepherd it is best to comb at least twice a week.

During the shedding season the normal shedding of a German Shepherd becomes much worse so you should consider using a shedding blade or similar tool since you will need proper training before you can use a shedding blade. When grooming your German Shepherd you should use a metal rake to take out the mats in the undercoat around the neck, chest and thigh areas. After bathing it is best to use a modern high velocity dryer to remove excess water instead of the hand fluff method. Always go in the direction of hair growth when you are brushing your dog.

When grooming your German Shepherd you may want to give them a haircut. You can use a pair of scissors to remove the long hairs that you find under the feet as well as the stray hairs around the feet. Rather, if you want a fluffier or fuller looking coat, you should brush the hair in the opposite direction of growth and then do light brushing in the direction of hair growth.

An alternative to the haircut is to use thinning shears to give the dog an overall neater appearance. Selective thinning is a good way to make your German Shepherd look heavier boned. Grooming isn't just limited to the coat because you also need to focus on the toenails, ears and teeth. While brushing be sure to check the nails and trim them regularly as needed in order to avoid split or broken nails that will occur when they are left unattended and grow too long.

Grooming your German Shepherd allows you to make sure that the oils in the fur are evenly distributed which helps prevent matting and tangles from occurring. It also helps to remove the dead skin cells and loose hair, which can clog the coat and take away from the neat appearance. Just be careful not to cut or scratch your dog's skin while you are grooming them. Use a combination of brushes and brush heads in order to make sure you tackle all parts of your dog's coat.

For the German Shepherd it is best that you select the right shampoo as well, since they can be easily affected by wheat and may have other allergies as well. Oatmeal shampoo is one option but it can cause material to build up faster, which means you will have to bathe the dog more often. If you don't have to worry about fleas then a shampoo with aloe is a good idea. By constantly using proper grooming techniques you can keep your German Shepherd looking well-groomed all the time.
